Singapore Swimming Association appoints Brad Dingey as Head Coach of the National Training Centre
Sep
22
SINGAPORE, 22 September 2022 - The Singapore Swimming Association (SSA) today announced that Brad Dingey has been appointed the National Training Centre (NTC) Head Coach with immediate effect. He will report to Gary Tan, National Swimming Head Coach, and support him in the successful operation of the high-performance swimming program at the national training centre, which includes planning and implementation of practice sets on the pool deck, working with sports scientists to enhance performance and preparation for competitions.
The position has been vacant since Tan, who was the incumbent, assumed his current role on 1 January 2022.
A Canadian national, Dingey brings with him over 20 years of coaching experience. He was most recently the Head Coach of Swimming Canada’s High-Performance Centre (HPC) – Vancouver. Prior to that, Dingey was base at the HPC - Victoria and was the Head Coach from 2019 to 2020 and Head Coach of the Next Generation Programme from 2015 to 2019. During his tenure at both centres, the athletes based out of them included Olympic medalists Hilary Caldwell, Ryan Cochrane, Emily Overholt and Brent Hayden. Under Dingey’s tutelage, his charges contributed 13 medals (7 of them gold) at the 2017 and 2019 World Junior Championships. He also ensures that there is progressive stream of athletes placed onto senior national teams representing Canada at the Pan American Games, Pan Pacific Games, Commonwealth Games and World Championships.
Commenting on Dingey’s appointment, National Swimming Head Coach, Gary Tan said, “We are extremely pleased to add Brad’s expertise to the National Training Centre. He brings a proven track record of success and expertise in developing high performance swimmers. We are committed to ensuring our training centres at the OCBC Aquatic Centre and the Singapore Sports School are in the best possible position to support our athletes and programs toward the Olympic Games in 2024 and 2028.”
SSA’s Technical Director (Swimming) Sonya Porter, adds, “Brad’s appointment is a critical link in the athlete pathway to develop our next generation of swimmers into senior national team members with podium potential in major games. His appointment will continue to enhance the world-class daily training environment at the National Training Centre.”
Said Mr Dingey, “I am excited to be given this opportunity and am appreciative of the confidence SSA is showing in me. The National Training Centre has demonstrated the important role that it plays in supporting Singapore swimmers at the very highest level. We want to continue to provide both swimmers and coaches the chance to succeed at the Asian Games, Olympics, and World Championships.”
Mr Dingey will be supported by NTC assistant coaches, Mr Gustavo Shurri and Mr Alex Mordvincev, and will be working with them to determine coaching responsibilities and athlete groupings over the coming weeks.
The NTC has been integral where Singapore’s swimmers achieved 21 gold medals, 11 silvers and 12 bronzes in the 2021 SEA Games in Vietnam. It has also delivered Singapore’s best away SEA Games results at the 2017 SEA Games in Malaysia with 19 Golds, and again at the 2019 SEA Games in Philippines with 23 Golds. Singapore also achieved their best Asian Games results in 2018 when the swimmers returned from Indonesia with 2 Golds, 1 Silver and 3 Bronzes, and saw Singapore finish third in the standings behind Japan and China. The NTC provides swimmers the accessibility to quality training driven by dedicated NTC coaches and support from sport scientists from Singapore Sports Institute (SSI) and National Youth Sports Institute (NYSI).
