Synopsis:

Raffles A had a blazing start to the tournament with this overwhelming win over Chinese Swimming Club. Despite the players having an average of less than a year of water polo experience, CSC put up a valiant fight and managed to score 3 goals against a team far more mature and experienced. The game was largely a one-sided affair with Lim Shang Cong, Raffles A, scoring the opening goal 30 seconds into the game. Raffles A ended the first quarter at 8-0 and never looked back.

COACH: Kuah Kar Huat; Alvin Lee

Synopsis:

The game started evenly matched between the teams despite an early goal by Rahhl Shankar, who sparked off a counter attacking move that capitalised on an offensive error by Outram. The first quarter ended with a slim advantage to ACS (Barker). Outram fought back at the start of the 2nd quarter and Nathanael pulled the game back to 1-2 shortly after ACS (Barker) scored their second goal through Joseph Tan. However, the superior fitness of the ACS(Barker) players started to make the difference with 2 unanswered goals in the remaining of the 2nd quarter. The rout continued in the 2nd half with Rahhl Shankar completing his hat-trick for the game.

Synopsis:

The match was clearly the National Women’s right from the start with the ladies scoring at the first attack of the game.  The dream start saw Belinda dribble past the defender and putting the ball beyond the goalkeeper and into the net with 5 seconds remaining in the shot clock. Belinda continued strongly and finished the first quarter with a hat-trick.  The 2nd quarter saw the ladies taking the game at their pace and extending the lead through goals from Ng Yi Wen, Poh Zhining and Chai T-Chien apiece. The Raffles B team, comprising of mainly lower secondary players, fought on and saw their only consolation goal coming from Joel Ling late in the game.

COACH: Ng Kok Wei and Gary Ortega

Referees:

Tan Hong Boon and Luo Nan

Synopsis:

The Combined Schools team, equivalent of the All-Stars team, stormed to their first victory of the tournament. Centre forward Ryan Tan’s perfectly placed backhand shot at 20 seconds into game clearly displayed the difference between the teams. The quality and depth of the Combined Schools players are evident with all but 3 players featured in the score sheet. The younger Raffles B team fought on and managed a couple of near attempts at scoring but could not convert the chances. Combined Schools will face the National Women’s team tomorrow in a match to determine who tops Group B. Both teams have qualified for the winner pool in Round 2. Raffles B will compete in the consolation pool and play for the 7th to 9th position.

Result:

Teams:

Dominic Tay Jin Jie; Nathanael Tan (2); Farris Chua (1); Daniel Toong; Jonathan Sze; Goh Jenn Jiang; Lester Yip (2); Sebastian Tay; Tan Li Yang; Thane Chan; Loe Kien Heng; Johnathon Chong; Kong Chun Feng

COACH: Ho Yee Cheong and Lau Kum Weng

Referees:

Wang Jian Guang and Anthony Lim

Synopsis:

Outram Secondary having lost to ACS (Barker) in the previous game, had to play for at least a draw to stand a chance to qualify for the winner pool, adopted an offensive strategy from the start of the game. However, the defence was compensated and ACS (I) capitalised on the defensive errors of its opposition with Irshar scoring a hat-trick via some well-executed set piece moves in the 1st quarter. At the quarter break, coach Lee Sai Meng made a tactical switch to a more balanced approach and the result was immediate with Outram in control of the 2nd quarter. Goals from Farris and Lester provided much needed boost to the team’s morale. 3rd quarter saw some of the finest offence and defence plays from both teams. The final quarter saw a late comeback by Outram but it was too little too late. ACS (I) will next play its sister school, ACS (Barker), with both teams already secured their place in the winner pool. Outram will join Raffles B in the consolation pool.

Group A - Raffles Institution Team A vs Great White Aquatics

Result:

12:2  (3:0, 4:0, 2:2, 3:0)

Teams:

Raffles A

Seetow Shiun Yong; Tan Wee Kian; Jonathan Lim(1); Ng Wei Shen (2); Soh Yu Da; Lee Yin Rong; Brandon Chong (3); Tom Yet (2); Lim Shang Cong (1); Marcus Lee; Koh Jian Ying (2); Jeremy Chee (1); Brian He

COACH: Wang Jian Guang

Great White

Cedric Lim; Jordon Wee; Russell Teo; Ang Zi Yan; Lim Fang Yan; Aaron Han; Benedict Ong; Webster Chia (1); Gabriel Tan; T. Pradeep; Lionel Tan (1); Clint Walling; Naavin

COACH: Kuah Kar Huat

Referees:

Tan Hong Boon and Luo Nan

Synopsis:

The final score may seemed like it was an easy game for Raffles A but the game was far from one-sided. Great White gave their opposition a run for their money as they displayed grit and determination in their defence. It was only in the middle of the 1st quarter that Raffles A managed to break the duck through Koh Jian Ying in a rare counter attack move. Throughout the rest of the game, Raffles A’s counter attacking play was contained by Great White’s zone defence. Despite that, Raffles A’s fluid attacking moves in the zone formation created opportunities for shooter, Brandon Chong to deliver from the perimeter of the zone. Raffles A’s goalkeeper, Seetow, had a superb game as he was constantly barraged by the Great White attack and his line was only breached in the 3rd quarter. With this result, Raffles A tops Group A and will play the runner-up of Group B on Thursday, 2 Nov. Tomorrow’s game will see CSC play against Great White for the final spot in the winner pool.

COACH: Ho Yee Cheong and Lau Kum Weng

Referees:

Nicholas Tan and Choo Chin Cheng

Synopsis:

The battle of the sister Anglo-Chinese schools saw some of the most exciting moments of the tournament to date.  The action kicked off right from the start with ACS (I) winning the swim down and launching its first attack. ACS (I) lost possession through a counter foul for ball under, managed to steal the ball from ACS (Barker)’s counter attack and Niam Jin Yang found himself in the hole and scored the first goal. ACS (Barker) answered right back with a strong offensive move by Rahhl Shankar in the centre forward position forcing an exclusion of ACS (I) star player, Thadeus.  ACS (Barker) took full advantage of the man-up situation with Aloysius scoring a cross shot from the 2-metre line.  Both teams rallied on and the score was tied at half-time. 3rd quarter saw a lapse in concentration from the ACS (Barker)’s defence, letting in 5 unanswered goals. In the final seconds of the quarter, Timonthy Cheng pulled one back with a clever tap in from close range and that brought the spectators on their feet in cheers. ACS (Barker) shook off the dismal 3rd quarter performance and put on a stunning comeback to pull the game back to within a goal. With 19 seconds left on the clock, coach Kuah Kar Huat called a timeout to set up the final attack. Rahhl took the shot with 5 seconds left but the ball hit the crossbar and was recovered by ACS (I) and they held on till the final buzzer.

Synopsis:

This crucial game will determine the final spot in the winner pool and both teams started out strongly with Great White’s Naavin drawing first blood. CSC cheered by their fans and supporters played their guts out and fought bravely despite their many chances at goal stopped by Great White goalkeeper, Cedric Lim. They finally scored in the 3rd quarter but found themselves already 5 goals behind. CSC will join Raffles B and Outram Secondary in the consolation round playoff for 7th to 9th position. Great White will meet ACS (I), winner of the earlier game, in tomorrow’s winner pool match.

COACH: Ng Kok Wei and Gary Ortega

Referees:

Tan Hong Boon and Chan Fran Meng

Synopsis:

Spectators were treated with a balanced formation play from both teams as neither teams were taking risk with their game plan given that both have already qualified for the winner pool. However, the Women’s team was off to a disadvantageous start as only 9 players were available for the game. The offence was severely handicapped by the absence of key players Belinda Ooi and Ng Yi Wen who scored 5 apiece in their previous game and they can only managed 3 goals in this game. The Combined Schools took advantage of the situation and played to a comfortable victory and top Group B.

Referees:

Tan Hong Boon and Wang Jian Guang

Synopsis:

With the winner of this game going on to compete in the gold medal playoff, both teams have everything at stake to play for. The game started out with both team taking a defensive stance holding out for the shot clock in the attack.  The first goal was scored by Joel Ng, Combined Schools, when he drove pass his defender and connecting a pass from the wing. ACS (Barker)’s Aloysius answered with a goal right after the restart to pull the score even. The 2nd quarter proved to be a decisive one with Combined Schools setting the pace and extending the goal difference through 2 goals from Foo Chuan Yu and 1 by Toh Yida. ACS (Barker)’s key striker, Rahhl Shankar, was shut out for most of the game by the full court pressing defence of Combined Schools and only managed to salvage a final consolation goal at the last minute of the game.

COACH: Kuah Kar Huat

Referees:

Choo Chin Cheng and Luo Nan

Synopsis:

ACS (I) stamped its authority from the beginning with Jin Yang, Cheng Ming, Gabriel and Thadeus scoring in the first quarter. In what looks likely to be a rout, Great White’s adopted a change in tactics and contained ACS (I) to a goalless quarter and only 2 goals in the 3rd quarter. With the game in the last quarter, Great White threw everything they had at ACS (I) in an all-out offensive play. Benedict Ong led the Great White fightback with a hat-trick and the spectators were cheering with each goal scored. But the 6-goal difference proved too much for Great White to salvage in a single quarter. Great White will join ACS (Barker) in the 4th to 6th position playoff and ACS (I) will join tournament favourite, Combined Schools, for the gold medal playoff.

Result:

5:3  (1:1, 2:0, 1:1, 1:1)

Teams:

Jacqueline Chow; Tan Su-Lynn; Dyan Lai (1); Adelyn Yew (2); Dior Lai; Huang Zhiqian; Valerie Loh; Poh Zhining; Lynnette Tan

COACH: Lee Sai Meng

Referees:

Daniel Wee and Leong Hoe Yin

Synopsis:

Both teams were neck to neck from the start with the ladies drawing first blood in the opening minute of play through Dyan’s quick flick at close range. The Raffles boys came right back into the game and equalised with a Koh Jian Ying goal from long range. Recognising the opposition goalkeeper’s weakness in saving long range shots, Raffles A’s following 2 goals by Tom Yet and Lim Shang Cong came from beyond the 5-metres mark. With a 2-goal margin by half-time, the National Women’s fought back strongly in the 3rd quarter which saw a flurry of exclusion fouls on the Raffles boys as they desperately hung on to their slim advantage. Despite 3 consecutive man-up situations, the ladies were unable to breach the tight defence of Raffles A. The best player of the match must surely be Raffles A goalkeeper, Seetow Shiun Yong, as he continually frustrates the National Women’s attack. Raffles A will join Combined Schools and their traditional rival, ACS (I) in the gold medal playoff.

COACH: Anthony Lim

Referees:

Luo Nan and Yip Ren Kai

Synopsis:

The game started off slowly as both teams move cautiously forward with each attack. Neither teams took necessary risk and were quick to fall back into zone defence. The deadlock was finally broken by Raffles B’s Lee Yan Sheng with 2 minutes left in the first quarter. For the spectators, the real action began in the 2nd quarter. Shawn Tay, Raffles B, received a pass from his teammate after the swim down at the beginning of the 2nd quarter and started driving right into the heart of the CSC defence. He amazingly swam pass 3 defenders and beating the goalkeeper with a well executed push shot. Raffles B took control of the 2nd quarter and widen the scoreline. CSC fought back in the 3rd quarter but was unable to convert the many chances and only managed to pull one back in the final quarter through Lim Churn Yi’s wild shot from 8 metres out at the last minute mark of the game.

Synopsis:

This game saw the most major fouls committed with 2 players from each team retired with 3 major fouls and 3 penalties awarded. ACS (Barker)’s Brice Chan was the first to be retired from the game after a mere 3 minutes and that led to Clint Walling’s goal from the man-up situation cancelling out the early goal from Aloysius Lum. The final 30 seconds of the first quarter saw a flurry of actions with ACS (Barker)’s James Gray excluded for a major foul and Naarin taking the lead for Great White. With 3 seconds left on the first quarter, Lionel Tan committed a major foul and ACS (Barker) was awarded a penalty. Timothy Cheng coolly placed it in the top corner for the equaliser. Rahhl Shankar scored the only goal in the 2nd quarter. He and his younger brother, Rishi, had a goal each in the 3rd quarter to put the game beyond Great White. Great White’s Clint Walling, an Under-14 player for the USA team, scored the final goal in dramatic fashion with a roundhouse sling shot turning his defender from 5 metres.

On the other end, Combined Schools was cruising right from the start and was 5 goals up at the end of the first quarter with Toh Yida scoring a double. The Combined Schools goal was never really challenged apart from a handful of direct 5-metre shot taken from an ordinary foul award. CSC started the game superbly with goals from Kristopher Kow and a double from Kelvin Kow before Outram’s Thane Chan pulled one back with 7 seconds left to the quarter break. When all seemed smooth sailing for CSC, Outram charged back and turned the 2-goal deficit into a 2-goal lead by half-time. Centre-forward Jonathan Chong scored 2 decisive goals in the one-sided 2nd quarter as CSC’s defence crumbled. The drama continued in the 3rd quarter with quick goals from Guataman and Kristopher Kow evened the score barely a minute from the restart. Both teams rallied on before Daniel Toong gave Outram the slight advantage going into the last quarter. 4th quarter saw CSC frantically searching for the equaliser and they finally got it through Guataman when he capitalised on the man-down situation after Nathanael Tan was excluded for sinking an opposition player. The last minute saw a nail-biting finish when Nathanael redeemed himself by scoring with 38 seconds left on the clock. CSC then set up the final attack. The play saw Outram’s Lester excluded and Leif Yap then took the last shot of the game but couldn’t find the target.

The Combined Schools has emerged as the tournament champion with this win over Raffles A. They were in control of the game from the start with Foo Chuan Yu taking slightly more than a minute to score the first goal from a backhand shot. The second goal saw Daryl Fung set up Darrell Teo with a no-look pass that cleverly faked the defenders.  The game then started to get more physical as both teams fought hard for every possession. In the 2nd quarter, the referees awarded a double exclusion as Combined Schools’ Darrell Teo and Raffles’ Lim Shang Cong were caught in a tussle with latter suspended for the remaining of the game for misconduct. Raffles A finally reorganised their attack in the final quarter but failed to threaten Combined Schools’ lead. Raffles A will meet ACS (Independent) in their final game in a fight for 2nd position overall.

1:8  (0:2, 0:2, 1:2, 0:2)

Teams:

Great White

Cedric Lim; Jordon Wee; Russell Teo; Ang Zi Yan; Lim Fang Yan; Aaron Han; Webster Chia; Gabriel Tan; Clint Walling; T. Pradeep; Angeline; Brenda (1); Junita

COACH: Lee Sai Meng

Referees:

Synopsis:

Having drew ACS (Barker) in the previous game, the Women’s team needed a win of at least 4 goals over Great White to secure the 4th position and they managed that and more. The Women’s team set the pace of the game from the start as they systematically formed up their attacks and effectively contained Great White. A goal apiece from Su-Lynn and Adelyn in the 1st quarter made it clear to the spectators that the game belonged to the ladies. Great White seldom threatened the Women’s team’s goal except by Brenda, who scored a consolation goal from a goal-mouth scramble.
